I always write best on a rainy day. Thank god it’s raining today because I have a lot of writing to do.
But what happens on those days when you just can’t seem to put two words together? Here are some tips that might help.
- Throw your computer out the window. (kidding)
- Read something from your favorite author or journalist… and then put it away.
- Pace
- Just start typing… free think.
- Visit OneWord.com to jump start the writing process.
- Try from another point of view.
- Drink large amounts of coffee.
- Drink large amounts of alcohol.
- Change your venue. Get out of the office and write somewhere else.
- Write what you really feel and shut down the editor in your head.
- Swear your head off at that stupid blinking curser on the screen… I mean really yell at it! (no pun intended)
- Go exercise intensely for 1 hour (bring your notebook)
- Shut the world down and day dream… allow your mind to be free.
- Write something else… a love letter perhaps.
- Keep a writing workbook, write down all ideas and revisit it when you get stuck.
- Lock yourself in your office and don’t come out until you have product (even if it sucks)
- Write with pen and paper… yeah, like in the old days.
- Get some sleep… you can’t write if you are tired.
- Ask a child for help (they have the most wonderful ideas)
- Stop reading this post and get to work.
Good luck and let me know what you do to break out of writer’s block.
