Back in the old days before I had children or a business to run, I would indulge in what I called my “Annual Weekend Read-A-Thon.” Over the course of some weeks (or months) as I went through my life, I would collect books, magazines, brochures, pamphlets etc and stack them in a pile by the side of my bed. When the pile became unwieldy, I planned a Read-A-Thon. Over this past weekend, unwilling to venture out into the hot and humid 90+ degree out of doors… I reinstated the weekend Read-A-Thon.
If you are a reader or writer, this is truly a luxury beyond a typical evening reading session. I encourage you to give the Read-A-Thon a try because you will be so happy, smart and relaxed come Monday morning you will barely recognize yourself. It all starts on Friday which is “prep” day. Get all your chores done (or not). Buy snacks (or just really great food). Tell everyone you are not available. Shut down the cell phone, lock the door, unplug the TV and veg out in your favorite reading chair or couch. You are here for the duration… just you and all that information you’ve been meaning to read for the last month. You have a mission. Time is not an issue until Monday morning.
Here is a sample of what was in my reading pile this weekend:
- Harry Potter – The Half Blood Prince. Finished this up
- Print Magazine – October 2009 issue. Print has revamped their website.
- Communication Arts – July/August 2009:Illustration Annual
- Essential Fashion Illustration – Edited by Maite Lafuente. Just lovely and even inspired me to do a bit of drawing.
- INK Magazine – August 2009
- ArtScope Magazine – July/August 2009
- American Daguerreotypes – From the Matthew R. Isenburg Collection. My signed copy in preparation for an upcoming article
It was so enjoyable to take a break from the world and delve into a knowledge bank of my own selection. Some well deserved napping was also a part of the agenda. Of course, I might just have to have another Weekend Read-A-Thon this weekend coming up. I didn’t finish my pile!
If you also love reading, please provide me with some recommendations on your favorite books, websites and magazines. The weekend is almost here!
