You are describing here everything that I feel. I am back n College at 32, not with kids, but with adult responsibilities. I do create as an artist, but my real passion is for the appreciation and the visual happiness I feel whenever I see a piece that is true mastership. Thanks for sharing, it was a delight to read.

That sounds so wonderful Daryl. I have to admit I'm a bit jealous. I have wanted to go to Rome/Florence since 1989... I know however, that I'd need at least a month to do it justice. It's on my Top 5 places to go and I'll definitely keep your advise in mind. Thanks.

Lisa,

I suppose now, that I must thank Caravaggio as well, since you were one of the one of the people who influenced me to consider the field of art history. I sympathize with your story completely, and I am happy to say that I am also happily installed in school, here at UMass Boston, where I have had the opportunity to get to know several fantastic (and in some cases quite renowned) art scholars.

I know exactly what you mean when you refer to that feeling - all of the air leaving your body. I'm sure I don't believe in "true love at first sight," unless it is love for a piece of art. For me it has been love for the late renaissance, counter-reformation mannerist movement works of Pontormo (The Deposition From The Cross - 1525), Parmigianino (The Madonna With the Long Neck - 1535), and yes even Bronzino's controversial work titled, Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time (1545).

I have found myself inspired, and enthralled by the works of other artists of diverse periods ranging from ancient times to the contemporary day. This is truly an interdisciplinary subject with great potential for personal growth and stimulation. There is always more to learn, to see, and to experience in the world of art and the community of artists and appreciators. Thank you, Lisa, for your encouragement and your inspiration.

That said, I must point out two small discrepancies in my comparative college experience; my classes have, sadly, been totally devoid of ascots and plush chairs.

...Takes me back to our day together at my studio, sharing these wonderful stories of art with each other. tears in our eyes as we spoke of the moment when we knew our artistic journey had begun and the tremendous impact it held and still holds. So happy to know you- you are an amazing woman!

Now that I know this about you, I have somewhere you must add to your list of places to see in this lifetime. I've been lucky enough to have more than a few cool art experiences but one of my favorites was in Rome. (Florence will always be number one but..) There are 2 Caravaggios in the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo. It is kind of off the beaten tourist path and you might walk right past if you didn't know. Tom and I had to wait for a wedding ceremony to end before we could enter. It was startlingly quiet once the doors shut out the laughter of the wedding party, our eyes adjusted to the light and there they were. Flanking the altar hang 2 stunning paintings. It is surreal. No guards, no tourists, I could have put my hand on the canvas. It is amazing to sit in a place and experience art like that outside of a museum setting. Everytime I see those images reproduced in a book or magazine I think of the people who go to mass there every Sunday and wonder if they know how lucky they are. You've got to go!

This anecdote, beautifully written, conveys the transformative force of art and the profound effect it can have on peoples' lives. It was wonderful to read; thanks for sharing.
