About a week ago, a young artist, Chris Cane, came to my house to gather information and advice on marketing his art. Chris is having his very first art exhibition at the age of 19 years old. His work will be on display at Simply Pearls Gallery at Water’s Edge Resort in Westbrook, Connecticut thru May 5, 2011. When I asked Chris if he was excited about his opening, he answered yes . . . but there is a much bigger mission that excites Christopher Cane. He wants to take his art and his creativity and go to Thailand. In his own words, here are his thoughts:
I believe that like learning a language, a certain gap in one’s young life provides a significantly greater chance for the youngster to grasp concepts of the creative process, which can prove useful down the road whether the child become a mathematician, a scientist, or an artist. When a child is given a certain amount of freedom, with the right materials, he or she can reach a state of engulfment in the creative process which I attempt to recreate. This state of mind inspires my paintings as I create new variables of freedom in color scheme, pattern, medium, frame material, methods of application, style, etc.
As a child, my grandparents, Lester and Sandy Scott, provided me with the atmosphere and materials which sparked my interest in the creative process. You might say I was intrigued by the creative process before I could even say ‘creative process’. Legos, Play-Doh, finger paintings, crafts, and coloring were some of my typical mediums of the time. Throughout elementary school, middle school, and high school the Westbrook public schools were able to provide me with at least one art teacher who apparently succeeded in keeping me interested in the creative arts. Now, with full support of friends and family, I would like to share with you some of my more recent paintings.
These paintings are now available for sale in an effort to raise funds for a personal, educational trip to Laos and Thailand which I plan to make next winter. My intention is to travel with friends at Mindy K’s Deli and Catering to both Laos and Thailand and aid them in the reanimation of schools and education for youngsters. I will grant the young children I meet the same freedom my grandparents gave me in the hopes of instilling in the kids a desire to act and think creatively.
I have begun a mural for a classroom at Waterford’s Friendship School for 3, 4, and 5 year old children. Working with and around the children will help prepare me for a similar experience in the far east.
If you would like to donate or commission a painting or mural to help raise funds please feel free to contact me by email at chrstphrcane@gmail.com or by telephone at (860) 304-0788.
